Apertivo alla Milanese: Tabletop.

Remember when I did the ‘Enter the Dragon‘ dinner with secret supper club Once Upon a Table? Well they asked me to help out with a Milan inspired dinner on Saturday. I was happy to accept and excited to get into the theme!

Knowing that the Milanese are very discerning and fashion-forward (Prada, Valentino and Versace are all head-quartered there), I decided to go with a chic, black and white theme accented by shoes!

Luckily, my friend Kim has the most incredible closet and she lent me some beauties (and I mean BEAUTIES) from her collection.

Feathers and the bird cage were sort of a sub-theme.

I bought a bunch of fabric and lace at the Western Markets and then I used my hot glue gun to glue the ribbon to vases bought at the Japanese Home Store.

Over on the bar, I moved away from silver and did a little gold montage with my friend Kirsten’s wedding shoes.

Andrea, who works for Bastianich Winery and Ambroso Wines, nicely donated all of the wines and led us in a little education about each bottle he opened.

More pretty black shoes inside! I really loved how the shoes brought out the anemones’ black center.

I also made a circle banner with Fornasetti images, thanks to a great suggestion from Kim. I printed out plates from various sites, punched holes and strung them up. I thought the ladies faces went well with the shoes and the designer Piero Fornasetti lived most of his life in Milan.

Unfortunately, we got a bit of rain five minutes before the guests arrived so I had to move the table under the eaves… but it wasn’t too big of a deal and a good reminder to be flexible always and to have a back-up plan.

Don’t Angie’s pork meatballs look deelish?

And here everyone is posing with the shoes!

Tomorrow I’ll share the menu and the food prepared by the Once Upon A Table team, above.

Hello Kitty cake.

I’ve written many times on this blog about the Asian love for all things ‘cute’ or Kitty so of course I had to share this fabulous Hello Kitty cake from I Heart Baking. Isn’t it unbelievable?!

I mean look at those little faces? All 56 of them!

And the inside is layers of pink ombre with chocolate ganache filling. Yum! Thanks Tam for sending over the link!

Sleep and babies.

I just have to share this adorable little scenario from one of my favorite nursery-inspiration blogs: Lay Baby Lay. You must check out this adorable blog!

All images from Lay Baby Lay. I  SO see myself being just like this gal–especially her last comment!

It’s SO hard to know what it will be like when your little one arrives… and that’s pretty much all I think about these days. And it’s clear from parents who’ve gone before us that SLEEP is *the* issue… I’ve been reading up on the subject… there are SO many opinions… Currently reading: Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. It’s main point: babies and children need lots of sleep (way more than I would have thought) and obviously the whole family is MUCH happier when they do get that sleep. And there are lots of signs that a baby is tired and when you see these signs, you have to put the baby down RIGHT away or they’ll be over tired and no longer able to fall asleep. Moms reading, were there any particular sleep books or methods you prescribed to?

Spring Cleaning: My dirty dozen.

Spring cleaning is something that I both look forward to and dread. The hardest part about it is it can seem so overwhelming… so one day I sat down and wrote a list of twelve things that need doing around the house that I just haven’t manage to get my arse in gear to do.

I adore lists. And this one has been especially satisfying to work through… Try and think of all those random little tasks that would make your life so much more enjoyable, but that you just haven’t had time to focus on! Replace batteries, order a replacement, sew a button on a shirt… And you don’t need to do them all in one day. Give yourself some time to tackle it–maybe one a day? You’ll be so happy when you’ve done it–I promise!
