Shanghai’s marriage market.

It seems there is a market for everything in Asia: vegetables, flowers, birds, fish, ladies clothing… so it only makes sense that there is also a marriage market. I do think it would be fun to check out this alternative to match.com on a visit to Shanghai. Thanks to Maddy for sending!

  1. In India we have the equivalent in the form of the Times of India matrimonial columns. Eager and somewhat anxious parents pay to advertise the virtues of their offspring and the requirements according to caste(yes unfortunately still a determining factor), education and financial status. Net-savvy Indians are now eschewing this for the country’s many matrimonial websites like Shaadi.com( wedding.com), jeevansathi.com( life partner.com)etc Arranged marriages are still the norm in India and active parental involvement still features even though things are slowly changing.

  2. Anjeeta, This is fascinating. Thanks for sharing!! Good to know newspaper classifieds are still alive somewhere.
