Apertivo alla Milanese: Waffle cones & café gelato.

As I was in charge of all the sweets for the Milanese dinner, my last little project was homemade mini waffle cones with homemade coffee gelato. Yum!!

I had a lot of fun with this project!

I borrowed a panini maker from my neighbor… this one didn’t have grooves. I think grooves would be preferable, but it still worked fine. The key is to get it really hot and to use a small scoop of dough.

It is a little time consuming as you make two cones every 7 minutes or so… it’s okay though if you have another kitchen project you can do intermittently.

Then comes the painful part… holding the circle half around a paper cone. OUCH! It really burns… you have to count to ten… and then it’s over!

The dough recipe is from the Food Network. And the cone cut-out and further instructions are from Panini Happy: here.

Little labors of love!

Then there was the question of how to serve the mini cones to dozens of guests. I decided to spray paint mini egg cartons gold and fill them with coffee beans, to tie in with the coffee gelato.

It worked perfectly, I have to say.

And honestly the cones and gelato were so tasty!! Yum. Here is the gelato recipe I used… it was perfect… I did it with fresh espresso. It is very simple, but you do end up with a lot of egg whites leftover so do try to think of something else to make with them… or just keep them in a tupperware for healthy omelets. Also, I needed to triple it to fill my Donvier… and trust me… you will want to as well! It’s so tasty!!

  1. Those look delicious!!! I wonder…have you ever worked with a pizzele maker? (It’s for a traditional Polish cookie.) The electric press is very similar, except there are two lovely snowflake designs that imprint on the dough. I think you’d have fun with one! In the meantime…the panini maker seems to be doing a fabulous job!

  2. Those look adorable and delicious, which is the perfect combination!
