Dining room table hunt.

Remember my debate about the dining room table? Well now I really wish I lived in the Northeast! I happened across this awesome idea where you can go up to Vermont and make your own naked table at Shackleton Thomas out of Sugar Maples.

After making your very own table, all 16 finished tables are combined so you can enjoy a meal with everyone you worked alongside.

I think it’s a really fun idea, although it is the ultimate in yuppy excursions. It reminds me a little of the Outstanding in the Field dinner I dragged the Mr. and my aunt and uncle to–as cool as eating dinner in a field at a 100 person table sounded (and yes the pictures are beautiful), it ended up being such a racket!

After getting a lesson–literally–on how to drop a seed into the ground, we waiting ages for our decent, but not great, food in a swarm of mosquitoes.

But, I digress… what I really want is a handy Mr. like my MIL has, who can just make a table for you! But alas my Mr. is really not up to that — and certainly not in our apt here in HK! So I decided to go with a custom table from Thailand. A friend of ours turned us onto this family run business… you can specify exactly what stain you want on your solid teak, what style you prefer, and how big you want your table to be–we even opted for a nicely sized leaf. Bonus: although there is a one month wait (which doesn’t seem very long to me, considering its being custom made just for you in Thailand!), it’s very affordable.

I ventured over to this other island called Ap Lei Chau to an insane, 28-story, blockhouse shopping center to the small storefront to see some samples and decide on the table particulars.

I decided on a nice imitation white leather for the cushions. It’s nice and neutral and will never stain.

So am I the only crazy person out there that really needs to visualize something to know how it will look? Here you can see me debating just how many people a 77 inch table will seat with or without a 12 inch leaf!

  1. When I’m allowed a table saw in the dining room, I will be handy.

  2. Remember your MIL just got her dining room table…that might mean you have to wait for, what? 30 years? 🙂

  3. I think you’re brilliant to lay the plates out on the floor. Wish I’d thought of that!

  4. That is a brilliant idea. I will have to write this down somewhere for helping a friend. Alas, I begged for and got my grandmama’s 1940’s set, so I better use what I have!

  5. My husband, an architect, would lay out the plates and plan in that exact same way. Me, I have little patience for that and this is why we fight/balance each other so nicely 🙂

Can’t wait to see your finished table – how cool that you get to pick all the options AND it’s affordable!

  6. Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Nick- hilarious… Although, those days are coming to an end for us!

  7. Jetset to Woodstock, Vermont for Valentines Weekend and make your own naked table (includes lodging, meals, hiking, table making, pottery design, and a new table and piece of pottery shaped and hand finished by you).

  8. I’m really enjoying the design and layout of your website. It’s a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more often. Did you hire out a developer to create your theme? Superb work!
