Forgotten Dutch housewife Olympian.

In 1948, the last time London hosted the Olypmics, a Dutch housewife won four gold medals–while being three months preggers!

“Fanny Blankers-Koen of Holland, 6 feet tall and 30 years old, was a “shy, towering, drably domesticated” straw-blonde mother of a 7-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter who talked of how she liked cooking and housekeeping. She also won four gold medals in track and field and became “as well known to Olympic patrons as King George of England.”  Nicknamed the “Flying Housewife,” Blankers-Koen achieved this feat while pregnant with her third child.” Read more about this ambitious and forgotten lady on the Smithsonian’s blog here.

I’m so impressed with all these women who run crazy races and distances while pregnant… I’m still really happy to be very active in my last days of pregnancy, but I’m sticking to yoga, pilates, walking and a little swimming… and certainly am not going for any gold medals!
