Gift closets and ‘Boo-boo Elephant’ giveaway.

I really love giving gifts, but there’s nothing I hate more than giving an over-priced, not good gift, which usually happens because it’s last minute. If you wait until you’re invited to the dinner party–chances may be that it’s already too late to find a great hostess gift. The solution to this is my gift closet, which is slowly growing as I discover great new items, which I then buy a couple of to have for a rainy day.

Or if I see something perfect for say a nephew’s 2nd birthday (even if he’s only 1 month old) I will just buy it and stock pile it away. Then when it comes time to wrap something, while I have the paper, ribbon, scissors and tape all out, I wrap a few things all together.

My latest addition to my gift closet is this adorable boo-boo elephant from Goodies of Desire–can you see all of the pink and blue plaid ears above?

The handmade elephant is filled with cherry pits, which hold heat and cold well. They’re also very green and give the elephant the coolest texture. The idea is that you can leave it in the freezer and when your little one incurs an injury, the cheerful elephant nurse comes to the rescue! Seriously, how adorable is that?! You know I love elephants and I adore traditions and this is a way to make a fun tradition even out of ‘owies.’

Goodies of Desire is generously giving away an elephant to one lucky HKHousewife reader. To enter to win, simply leave a comment with one of your favorite gifts, either to give or receive. The winner will even be able to choose whether they want a pink or blue elephant. All entries must be received by August 22nd.

While we’re on the subject of giveaways, the winner of our Loveramics Salad Bowl giveaway was our 14th commenter: Elizabeth. Her answer to her favorite summer salad was one of my new favorites as well:

“Newest summer salad discovery – watermelon, tomato, feta, mint, balsamic, big crusty croutons. So delish, clean and pretty!”

I highly recommend trying it! Other readers left inspiring salad ideas so make sure to check out the comments here. Congrats Elizabeth and to the rest of you: please enter to give this awesome elephant a proper home!

  1. Am I allowed to enter? That is wicked cute. I love elephants, too!
My favorite gift to give is a butter keeper- as you know, to me having soft, spreadable butter is one of the little things that makes a place feel like home to me. I love giving them as wedding or shower gifts (or as part of one).

  2. I’ve been giving aprons for bridal showers and weddings. I usually buy an apron for the groom, make one for the bride, and include the fundraiser cookbook from the organization where I work (marking my recipes). At one time, I had a gift box, but I don’t believe I ever wrapped ahead of time. That’s a good idea.

I’m a new reader to your blog, found through your MIL’s site, and have thoroughly enjoyed reading clear back to the beginning post. I’ve never visited Hong Kong but have spent a little time to Taiwan; I like seeing the similarities between the countries.

  3. My favorite gifts to give are books! I take forever looking for just the perfect one and it MUST be something that reminds me of the gift receiver. 😀

  4. I try to give lots of handmade gifts. Though, if I’m buyimg a gift I love to give books.

  5. My favorite gift to give is food. I love taking care of hungry people, especially when they are not expecting it. I enjoy packing food for travelers – homemade granola bars, fruit leather, sandwiches, fresh fruit and vegetables, etc.
One of my favorite things I have given is a honeymoon basket. It had food for the newlyweds, knowing that one cannot always find or remember to pack snacks that are nutritious and delicious.

  6. That elephant is adorable; I love traditions and the way that mom can play such an important role in loving her little ones through booboos. (I also feel sorely inadequate at the nursing task–not really sure why, but I do. Lack of experience until motherhood perhaps?) Thanks for the idea! Love your blog too.

  7. Oh this is so cute! We have a “frosty bear” who definitely helps at those hard times, but this is even better because it is terry cloth! So nice. 🙂

I love to give handmade gifts, quilts, baby blankets with matching clothes, etc. Also, cookbooks with my favorites marked!

  8. I love giving books as gifts (everybody loves a book) and also homemade jam!

  9. aww, cute! we have a “boo bunny” but it’s not very earth friendly, having a plastic ice cube in its middle.

I give books as gifts, or handmade things that I sew or knit, or sometimes my own homecanned things or bread. I often find cool gift ideas on etsy too, that aren’t just the usual mall gift.

  10. I love to give books since I am a librarian and all 🙂

  11. I’m detecting a strong preference for book gifting here… Big surprise! 🙂
One thing I like to do is gift a recipe (either handwritten or part of DIY cookbook compilation from along with the dry goods to make the recipe.
